Two remarkable operas, from different eras and with different styles, were recently staged by the Thessaloniki State Conservatory and are now available for free on YouTube, offering the general public the opportunity to enjoy them from home.
Τhe two productions
C. M. von Weber: Abu Hassan
Carl Maria von Weber’s one-act comic “Oriental” opera, based on a story from *One Thousand and One Nights*, was presented by the Thessaloniki State Conservatory in collaboration with the institution’s School of Melodrama, Symphony Orchestra, and Choir. Leonard Bernstein: Trouble in Tahiti
Leonard Bernstein’s one-act opera, written in English by the composer himself, is a scathing, jazz-influenced look at the life of a couple in the American suburbs of the 1950s. The Thessaloniki State Conservatory presented it for the first time in Thessaloniki in September 2025, at the Royal Theater, in collaboration with the National Theater of Northern Greece, with Demosthenes Fotiadis as music director and Akis Lalousis as stage director.
