On September 4, the 54th Book Festival opens its doors at Pedion tou Areos, creating a welcoming gathering place for book lovers and reading enthusiasts of all ages. 210 publishing houses, 285 booths, more than 200 cultural events, concerts, theater performances, interactive educational activities, and many more events make up the program of the 54th Book Festival 2026.
The Book publishers’ Association is organizing this year’s Festival under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Attica, and the Municipality of Athens, and with the patronage and support of the Hellenic Foundation for Books and Culture and the Athens Chamber of Trades and Professions.
The event is supported by the Organization for Culture, Sports, and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA) and the Collective Management Organization for Literary Works (OSDEL).
“Sustainable Development: The Book as the Architect of Tomorrow”
The 54th Book Festival is dedicated to fostering a sense of collective consciousness and social responsibility toward the planet and future generations.
Inspired by the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the Festival highlights issues such as quality education, social equality, environmental protection, responsible consumption, cultural inclusion, and the sustainable development of cities and societies.
Through the philosophy of the Sustainable Development Goals, the book serves as a guide to knowledge, reflection, and creativity, bringing citizens into contact with universal values, sustainable practices, and innovative ideas. With this book as a guide and companion, it highlights not only the value of protecting natural resources but also the need for harmonious and responsible coexistence within the global community.
A rich program of events
As part of the Festival, a rich and multifaceted program of parallel events has been organized in collaboration with major cultural and social organizations.
Among other things, the following will take place: a three-day showcase of emerging writers, an event organized by the Hellenic Comics Academy, as well as roundtable discussions hosted by the Network for Children’s Rights, the Greek section of IBBY, the European Parliament Office, and the European Commission Representation in Greece.
The program also includes workshops for children, interactive events organized by the Panhellenic Cystic Fibrosis Association and the “I Floga” association, a children’s theater performance of “Alice in Fishland” by the theater production company METHEXIS, a Karagiozis shadow puppet show by the Nikola Tzivelekis Shadow Theater, a concert by the Greek Music Workshop of the City of Athens, as well as the concert “A Journey Through Time with Songs from the Screen” featuring Mario Strofalis and Irini Toubakis.
From September 4 to 20, 2026, with free admission.
The official opening will take place on Monday, September 7, 2026, at 8:00 p.m.
