Taking as its starting point the events that became known as the “flour massacre” in Gaza in late February 2024, the performance (PEACE OF) BREAD — FOR A LOAF OF BREAD highlights the profound human need for food, dignity, and peace. At that time, Palestinian civilians’ search for basic necessities turned into a tragedy when fire was opened on them. Despite these conditions, people continued to bring flour to their families, while women baked bread in makeshift outdoor ovens, distributing it to the hungry.

Inspired by this reality, artist Doris Hakim, of Palestinian and Cretan descent, creates a ritualistic performance that focuses on the symbolic and literal significance of bread. Using a makeshift oven—similar to those used in Gaza—she reenacts the process of baking in a public space, imbuing it with dimensions of catharsis, solidarity, and collectivity.

The event will feature a lecture by Makis Solomos (Professor at Paris 8 University) titled: “Music and Sounds of Gaza, from Gaza for Gaza.”

The talk examines:

The musical creativity of Palestinians from Gaza in their places of exile,

International music events in support of the cause,

The “biopolitics of sound” in Gaza: the use of sound as a means of oppression and forms of sonic resistance (sumud).
