The new exhibition “I Was Threatened Only by Uncontrollable Thoughts,” which will be presented at the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania. The exhibition, which will run from May 16 to October 4, 2026, is curated by art historian Christoforos Marinos.
More than 150 paintings, installations, animations, comics, sculptures, notes, and sketches “occupy” the three exhibition levels of the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania, without following the linear narrative of a classic retrospective exhibition.
They highlight the innovative perspective the artist introduced to contemporary Greek art, influenced by the media, private television, new technologies, computers, pop culture, music, comics, graphic design, fashion, design, and architecture.
They intertwine, interact, and confront one another, highlighting the “keys” to Alexandros Psychoulis’s work: the language that runs through and defines his entire body of work, the handmade coexisting with technological mediation, and the clash of the urban with the digital landscape within a constant state of transformation.
“I was threatened only by uncontrollable thoughts” is the observation made by Alexandros Psychoulis as he recounts, with honesty, humor, and a reflective mood, his personal journey and his many experiments in the fields of visual arts, music, and theater in his extensive—rather than biographical—text, which is included in the fully illustrated bilingual (Greek–English) exhibition catalog.
“A retrospective exhibition of an artist’s work is usually perceived as a form of summary, as a process leading to archiving and historical evaluation. Alexandros Psychoulis’s retrospective can also be viewed differently: as the ripe fruit of a planting gesture. “It is the moment of harvest—the gathering of the fruits of a long artistic journey—and at the same time the promise of new seeds,” notes Christoforos Marinos in his original critical analysis of the artist’s work, which follows the flow of the alphabet.
Alexandros Psychoulis was born in Volos in 1966 and studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts. His early works are interactive installations, activated by the viewer, that explore the subconscious, decoding fears, desires, or memories into images or sounds. The exploration of the landscape of digital reality remains a central focus of his work today, which consists of site-specific installations, animation, and painting. In 1997, he was awarded the Benesse Prize for his work *Black Box*, with which he participated in the 47th Venice Biennale, and has held numerous exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He is a professor of “Art and Technology” in the Department of Architecture at the University of Thessaly.
