This is the catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name organized by the Historical Archive of the National Bank of Greece at the Small Stock Exchange in Athens (Pesmazoglou 1) and will run from December 13, 2025, to April 19, 2026. Following the structure of the exhibition, the catalog presents aspects of the assistance provided by the National Bank of Greece to the Greek state’s difficult task of resettling Greek Orthodox refugees following the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne, primarily on the basis of an agreement signed between them on May 5, 1925, concerning the administration of “properties in Greece belonging to exchanged Muslims.”
Based on material produced during the internal operations of the National Bank of Greece at that time, the catalog (147 pp., 116 ill.) addresses, in its first part, issues concerning the payment of compensation by the National Bank, the management of the property of the Muslim populations subject to exchange, as well as the Bank’s contribution to the 1924 refugee loan, housing, and business support for refugees, among other matters.
The second part attempts to outline aspects of the identity of Greek Orthodox refugees who were called upon to integrate into Greek society both within and beyond the country’s borders, as evidenced by a study of the documentary material of the National Bank of Greece held in its Historical Archives.
