Yerma, whose name means barren land, is married to Juan and longs for children, only from her husband. Juan cannot, he does not have the passion to do so. Victor, who could, does not belong to her. Her husband, immersed in suspicions about her, calls his sisters to his house to watch her.

Yerma, in her anguish, reaches hysteria. One night, in a monastery dedicated to a fertility saint, in a last-ditch effort, she runs into Juan, who has been hiding and listening to a conversation between his wife and an old woman who reveals that her husband is to blame. When he, on the verge of cynicism, confesses that he feels better without children, she explodes and strangles him. Seeing in Juan only the child she never had, she kills him, killing with him the possibility of ever having one.

Adapting F. G. Lorca’s Yerma, we look forward to a performance that succinctly conveys the poet’s existential anguish beyond the text’s customary background, in order to convey the brutality of a dark life, but also its tender lyricism. The passion of the flesh and the tragic fate that characterizes Lorca here and in his other texts. Heroes who carry on their backs a legacy full of pain, passion, and blood. Betrayed love, betrayed nature, the dissatisfaction of motherhood. Substances that slant beneath the verse with a gaze that strips away the details, approaching the symbols as and where they have their magnitude.
