Athens continues its dynamic progress on the global tourism map, winning two more important distinctions at the World Travel Awards 2025, one of the most recognized institutions in the international tourism industry.
The Greek capital was named World’s Leading Cultural City Destination and, for the first time globally, World’s Leading City Break Destination for 2025. The two awards were presented at a special ceremony held last Saturday (December 6) in the capital of Bahrain, Manama, where Athens was represented by the CEO of the Athens Development Agency, Ioannis Georgizas, and executives of the organization.
On the occasion of these two important global distinctions, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, stated:
“Athens consistently proves that it can claim and achieve top positions on the global tourism map. Culture, extroversion, and sustainable development are at the heart of our strategy for an open, vibrant, and humane city. These distinctions reflect the collective efforts of the municipality, Athens Development Agency, and all the organizations that work daily to enhance the image and experience of Athens internationally.”

For his part, Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of Athens Development Agency, who accepted the two awards on behalf of the city, emphasized:
“These awards confirm the strategy we are implementing at Athens Development Agency, through This is Athens and the municipality’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, promoting the city’s modern, creative, and sustainable identity internationally. We continue to steadily develop partnerships, plan targeted promotional activities, and strengthen Athens’ presence in important foreign markets.”
