As a natural receptor of 8,000 years of history, the plain of Drama is part of the “Park of Philippi” and the connecting link between the ancient cities of Philippi and Amphipolis, making this geographical axis a single “Plain of Culture.” The natural springs of Drama, which have nourished the plain for centuries, are intertwined with the life and cultural history of the region, which dates back to the Paleolithic Age, the beginning of the worship of the god Dionysus by the ancient Thracian tribe of the Edoni, the continuation of his worship during the reign of Philip II of Macedon, up to the modern era with the continuation of viticulture and wine production.

The dialogue between the arts of music and sculpture, inextricably linked to ancient Greek culture, aims to seek out echoes of the past amid the noisy landscape of the modern era. The sound of the flute and harp, as well as marble, the material from which the ancient history of the region was carved, are the inspiration for this contemporary cultural composition.

Odysseas Tosounidis, with the geometric form, the lively rhythm, and the musicality of his sculptures, contemplates the echo of his handcrafted art, raising questions about the role of sculpture and the essence of the eternal material of marble in the context of our rapidly developing modern era.

Dimitris Doxakis’ original compositions explore the boundary between harmony and moderation with ecstasy, attempting to fuse the two states into one body, that is, seeking the ideal balance between the Dionysian and Apollonian elements. The composer draws inspiration from the timbres of ancient Greek music through a creative and multi-stylistic writing style that incorporates both classical and modern elements.

This cultural initiative is the result of collaboration between the Drama Development Agency and Cultural_Space AMKE as part of the LEADER program and the Interregional Plan entitled “Philippi Park/Plain of Culture,” Sub-measure 19.3 of the RDP 2014-2020. The action is part of the art and cultural events taking place at iconic locations along the Egnatia Road and expresses the shared vision of utilizing contemporary artistic creation as a strategic means of extroversion, development, and progress of our culture.
