AUTODIA, the Greek Collective Management Organization for musical copyright, published the results of a public opinion survey conducted in collaboration with ALCO.
At a time when the cultural and creative sectors are experiencing daily economic damage and unfair competition with the rapid development of general-purpose AI models (GenAI) and systems for producing artistic content of all kinds, ALCO’s research reflects Greek society’s full recognition of the role and importance of composers and lyricists in the creation of musical works.
94% consider the role of composers and lyricists to be important, while 62% are interested in and take into account the name of the composer/lyricist when choosing to purchase or download and store musical works.
Universal request for AI project labeling
There is almost universal agreement on the need for labeling of musical works produced by artificial intelligence.
Ninety percent believe that there should be a special label so that listeners/consumers know that a musical work is the product of artificial intelligence. In addition, 84% believe that AI-generated musical works should list the names of the works used as source material for their production.
Fair remuneration for creators
There is a very strong perception among the Greek public that creators should be remunerated for the use of musical works as material for the production of artificial intelligence products.
Seventy-three percent (compared to just 12%) believe that composers/lyricists of works used as material to produce a musical work by artificial intelligence should receive remuneration from companies that produce musical works using artificial intelligence.
The ALCO survey was conducted through telephone interviews from May 3 to May 8, 2025, on a sample of 1,000 individuals, both women and men, aged 17 and older, throughout Greece.
Composer and Chairman of the Board of AUTODIA Yannis Glezos commented on the findings of the survey: “The Greek public widely recognizes and supports what we creators are collectively demanding from European institutions and national governments through stronger political and legal measures and actions: The use of our musical works by artificial intelligence start-ups requires the consent of the creator, licensing by the organization/body that represents them, and remuneration. Protect human creativity so that we can continue to compose music and create songs with soul and inspiration.”
