Through this dialogue between mediums, a journey through the city unfolds—bustling streets, secluded neighborhoods, and nearly forgotten small shops are not presented merely as frozen fragments of reality. Rather, they function as punctum: those small, often inexplicable details that leave a lasting emotional imprint, transforming the act of seeing into an experience. The addition of tufting on the photographic surface may be exactly that—turning the image into a tactile archive. The seemingly fixed dominance of grey as the color of everyday urban life is challenged by the artists’ perspective. Together with photographer Nikosontherun, they choose to capture neighborhoods where color still survives. New, vibrant cityscapes emerge—ready to be felt—where the act of weaving reclaims space in a unique way, inviting us to engage with ourselves as part of a city that remembers, intervenes, and moves as a fluid body, never static.
Touch and vision are activated in tandem to rearticulate the urban landscape, telling stories of the streets that remind us Thessaloniki—shaped by its distinctive Balkan identity—is today at a crossroads of transformation. Its character is shifting, increasingly tolerating and at times even celebrating gentrification. This moment reveals the urgent need to reinvent the city’s identity—perhaps in a new direction. One that acknowledges collective memory and accepts that the homogenization of urban space follows no fixed blueprint, but is something rebuilt—again and again—collectively.
40roomors
40roomors is an artistic duo based in Thessaloniki, active in the field of contemporary textile art. For the past four years, they have been developing the tufting technique as self-taught artists, while also deepening their practice in tapestry art under the guidance of their teacher, Lia Eleftheriadou. Their work balances design precision, materiality, texture, and space. Architecture and graffiti—two central references in their work—serve not only as aesthetic influences but as frameworks for viewing and intervening in the world. Through exhibitions, educational programs, and participatory workshops, 40roomors create a space of action where weaving becomes a tool for storytelling, expression, and collective creation.
