This summer, the Historical Archive and Museum of Hydra will host the exceptional photographic creations of renowned photographer Amalia Sotiropoulou.

Amalia Sotiropoulou is a true artist photographer who redefines Greek identity through her lens, creating images that balance the past and the present, the classical and the contemporary. Her work is characterized by a neo-pop aesthetic, where mythology, history, and contemporary culture interact in a bold yet deeply thoughtful way by the talented creator.

One of the most impressive elements of her work is her ability to transform iconic figures, such as the Caryatids (which we have hosted in the past at our space at IAMY), the Sirens, or the Nike of Samothrace—giving them a new interpretation through the dynamism of light, color, and composition. Her gaze does not simply reproduce classical beauty, but reconstructs it, adding elements of modernism and abstraction that provoke the viewer to reflect on their cultural heritage.

Her use of light in her art is extremely skillful, as it functions not only as a means of revealing forms, but also as a symbolic tool that highlights the drama and allegorical dimension of her themes. The gaze of the figures in her photographs often conveys a sense of mystery and transcendence, as if they are conversing with the viewer beyond time.

In a dialogue with contemporary art and photographic tradition, Amalia Sotiropoulou manages to remain authentic and subversive, offering images that are not only beautiful, but also deeply moving and thought-provoking. Her work is not just an ode to the past, but an invitation to see it in a new, more contemporary way.

Amalia Sotiropoulou sees her art as a challenge to involve others in her own experiences. For her, photography is born the moment she captures a scene with her gaze, presses the button, and clicks…

Her art is a vehicle in a process that continues unabated because, as Amalia says, “photography makes me happy.”

She has participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
