Ersi Gallery on Wednesday 7 May 2025, 19:00 presents the solo exhibition of Vassilis Papageorgiou entitled Lignea Creatura Stans (Wooden Creature Stands).
The plant, animal and human world, legend, myth, fantasy and dream make up the new artistic theme of Vassilis Papageorgiou. His oxymoronic heroes, the wood sculptures he invents, are located in the two- and three-dimensional space that surrounds us, in a constant rotation. Supervising aesthetically, the depth of the consequences of the destruction of the world by human intervention creates values from cultural references of tradition and nature that define the parameters of coexistence.
The central form of the work is developed around a wood figure and then the process of depositing elements, where the paint incorporates the natural texture of the wood with ripples. Wood makes us think about the relationship between nature and human intervention in it.
The imposing and self-sufficient forms seem to communicate in an indissoluble way through their energy and their aura, thus suggesting a metaphysical connection with space-time. The freedom and autonomy of the fragmentary forms in Papageorgiou’s work stimulate instinct and logic at the same time.
As the artist himself declares:
“The anthropomorphic wooden figures with their branch arms, joined legs and large hats came about spontaneously in the year 2021, in drafts. Taking the baton from a long period of landscape painting, I ended up integrating them into the natural landscape, alone or in groups. In these spaces, the figures move and do not move, gesture without hands, isolate themselves, whisper, conspire, stand emblematically, remeasure themselves with the elements of nature and even with the myth of Icarus. In the process, small black wood sculptures were created. The totemic character highlights their silhouette. I called them ‘wood sculptures’.”
