The Ministry of Culture is proceeding with the restoration and promotion of the monumental complex of the Agora in the archaeological site of Dion, through the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of Pieria.
The building block of the Ancient Agora is the most important block of the city of Dion, as it was home to the public buildings and other buildings of political and social life, such as the Thermon complexes and the Odeon. One of the important monuments of the Agora is the ceramic kiln, which was discovered on the northern side of the site and dates back to late antiquity. It is rectangular with two chambers, one for fuel and one for ceramics. It consists of four pairs of rectangular piles supporting the grate, made of ceramic bricks and clay. The Central Archaeological Council gave a unanimous positive opinion on the conservation and restoration study.
The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, said: “The Ministry of Culture is carrying out a wide-ranging and multidimensional project to protect and enhance the archaeological site of Dion, one of the most important, from a historical and archaeological point of view, archaeological sites in Macedonia. In the summer we completed the restoration of the Hellenistic theatre of Dion and presented it to visitors and the public as part of the 53rd Olympus-Dion Festival. Likewise, the upgrading of the reception and visitor service infrastructure was completed, and now Dion has the entrance-shop and refreshment building renovated by the Cultural Resources Management and Development Organization. The first phase of the project of restoration and promotion of the Agora, implemented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Pieria, is completed with funds from the Regional Operational Programme of Central Macedonia NSRF 2021-2027 and within this year the start of the next phase is expected. At the same time, the process of preparing the study for the renovation of the Archaeological Museum of Dion is ongoing. With these projects we are contributing to the aesthetic and functional upgrading of this major archaeological site, and at the same time, to attracting more and more visitors.”
