The Board of Directors of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies sadly bids farewell to the distinguished Hellenist, Emeritus Professor of Philology of the University of Crete, Alexis Politis.
Alexis Politis leaves a valuable legacy to Greek letters on multiple levels. His studies on the Folk Song are a landmark. Furthermore, his insightful studies on the history of ideas and attitudes, as they emerge in the literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, make a key contribution to the analysis of the historical events of the period. His work ranks among the classic reference works on these subjects.
He was a corresponding member of the EKIM, an excellent friend and supporter of its work through lectures, participation in scientific symposia and book presentations at the Historical Museum of Crete. His participation as a keynote speaker at the 13th International Cretological Congress in Agios Nikolaos in 2022 was outstanding.
The Board expresses its deep sorrow to his wife Angela Kastrinakis, his daughter Alki and all his relatives, and decides to organise an event for his work at the Historical Museum of Crete.
