After their triumphant presence at Death Disco Open Air Fest 2023, it was a popular demand that their return to Greek soil should be as soon as possible. They were one of the bands that although they were forced to play under the relentless summer sun and the unbearable heat of 44 degrees, they managed with their rhythmic, catchy and extroverted post-punk to get the crowd going and make many new friends in this first appearance in Athens.
So on Saturday 1st of February, the beloved Actors, having just released three excellent singles as a pre-release of their new album, will be at the Gazarte Ground Stage for their first headline show in our part of the world.
ACTORS started their career by releasing a series of singles starting with “Post Traumatic Love” in 2012. A full six years later, the Jason Corbett-led foursome signed with Toronto-based Artoffact Records and promptly released their highly anticipated debut album, It Will Come to You, which quickly became one of the label’s best-selling albums. Their second LP release, Acts of Worship, followed in 2021, and in late 2020, ACTORS announced a new single, “Love U More,” with Juno Award-winning director Peter Ricq directing the accompanying video.
Songs like “L’appel du Vide”, “Slaves”, “Face Meets Glass” and “Bury Me” are songs that shine through Corbett’s production: distorted beats accompanied by warm synth layers and substantial guitar interludes, and bass/drums added by the rest of the band members. Corbett writes, produces, mixes and masters all of the Actors’ music at his own Vancouver studio, Jacknife Sound, and names David Bowie as his fundamental influence. Their music on first listen is post-punk based although they, along with bands like The Soft Moon, have essentially redefined the sound and made it sound more current than ever.
ACTORS have spent the last few years touring the US, Canada and Europe, and have participated in many of the most popular festivals, such as Amphifest, Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Cold Waves, Substance, Death Disco Open Air Festival, Verboden and many more.
Special Guests: SACRED SKIN
Along with ACTORS, Sacred Skin from Los Angeles will perform for the first time in Athens. Their first single (Colder) was released in March 2021 and stole the hearts of dark souls everywhere with its melancholic tones and perfect pop aesthetics. Their subsequent singles released in 2021 (Eyes Closed and Far Away) led to early live performances at LA’s Substance Festival and the famous Hollywood Palladium.
The succession of singles and live performances led to the release of their first LP, The Decline of Pleasure in May 2022. With its dreamy new wave compositions and DaMert’s intense and passionate vocals, the album easily stood out from similar releases of the era. Their second LP Born on Fire was released on September 13, 2024 and is already considered one of the most important new wave releases of the year.
Their sound and their live performances are a unique time travel to the glorious moments of synth pop / new wave of the 80’s expressed by bands like Human League, Tears for Fears etc. If – like us – you are still fascinated by this period, don’t miss them for any reason.
