The protection and promotion of the vaulted tomb at Georgikon – Xinoneri in Karditsa, one of the best preserved burial monuments of the Mycenaean period in Thessaly, is initiated by the Ministry of Culture, after the positive opinion of the Central Archaeological Council on the architectural studies, the configuration of the surrounding area, the studies of electromechanical installations and the fire protection study.
The vaulted Mycenaean tomb of Georgikos – Xinoneri is located at the site “Koufia Rachi”, at a distance of about five kilometres from Karditsa. During the gradual removal of the stones, a large number of small objects, both clay and metal, were found, which led to the conclusion that the site was used in later times as a “Sanctuary of the ancestors”.
The planned interventions are developed around two main axes: 1. The visitor routes, and 2. The design of auxiliary buildings (guardhouse – warehouse – WC) for the service of the public and staff. The main traffic starts from the parking area, passes through the main entrance in front of the guardhouse, and continues to the entrance of the tomb, along a landscaped route with platforms at intervals, which in some cases are combined with staging areas and information signage locations. For disabled access to the interior of the tomb, a modern construction was chosen to overcome the ancient wall blocking the road. For the location of the auxiliary buildings, the data of the entrance to the monument, the location of the existing parking area, the planned movements of visitors and the access of disabled persons were considered. A ramp ensures disabled access to both the outpost and a separate WC, designed to specification.
The fire protection study of the archaeological site includes the installation of a permanent water supply fire network with fire nests around the perimeter of the archaeological site, which are fed from an underground water tank through a pumped fire fighting system. The study of electromechanical installations for the auxiliary building covers air conditioning, active fire protection, electrical installations, lightning protection, water supply and drainage – storm water installations.
