The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy and the National Foundation for Research and Studies “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, in cooperation with the Municipality of Chania, present the exhibition “Politics and Society in the Cretan State, 1898-1913” in Chania, at the exhibition space of the Centre for Mediterranean Architecture. The opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, 16 November 2024 at 19:00.
The exhibition was successfully presented in Athens, at the exhibition space of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation from November 2023 to February 2024. Now, in a new and enriched form, the exhibition will be hosted until 31 January 2025 in the old capital of the Cretan state, the centre of political developments and cultural life of the island in the period preceding its unification with Greece. The visitor can follow the stages of the formation and development of the Cretan State, from the 1897 Revolution, to the periods of the two High Commissioners of Crete (1898-1908) and the Therissos Revolution (1905), to the years of self-determination of the Cretans (1908-1912), which were marked by the great union rallies and the attempts of Cretan deputies to participate in the work of the Greek Parliament. The historical journey of the exhibition ends with the period of the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), which will lead to the official union of Crete with the Greek State on 1 December 1913. Alongside the political and institutional dimension of the Cretan State, the achievements in education and science are presented, as well as the aspects of everyday life of the period, both in its urban and rural manifestations.
The report and the accompanying brochure are bilingual (Greek and English). The documents are presented in their original form (printed and handwritten documents, letter cards, textiles, scrapbooks, etc.), as well as in photographic reproductions. They come from the archives of the National Foundation for Research and Studies “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, from the Ismini Kriaris Collection, the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation / Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive, the Photographic Archives of the Benaki Museum, the Alpha Bank Art Collection, the Library of the Hellenic Parliament, etc.
