This year – a milestone in the history of VERGOS Auctions, which this year completes 35 years of presence in Greek auctions, is completed with the auction of 19th & 20th century Modern Greek Paintings & Sculpture. The auction will take place on Wednesday, 11 December at 6:00 pm at the Zappeion Hall and will include 153 works of art, covering the entire range of artistic movements of the period. The works of the auction will be presented in a three-day exhibition in the same venue between 8-10 December with free admission to the public.

One of the most important works of Nikiforos Lytras, “Orthros”, stands out in the auction. The work was presented in the context of an exhibition at the same venue that will be auctioned today, at the Zappeion, 117 years ago. It received rave reviews from the public at the time and was described as the ‘diamond’ of the exhibition. The ‘Sailboat‘ by the great marine painter Konstantinos Volanakis is also expected to attract the interest of collectors, as well as the ‘Thessaloniki Memorial‘ by Konstantinos Maleas, which bears a dedication by the artist to Thallis Koutoupis, a well-known collector of works by Konstantinos Maleas.
The triad of works by the great masters of Modern Greek Painting is completed with unique works by Michalis Economou, Fotis Kontoglou, Theophilos, Georgios Gounaropoulos, Nikos Hadjikyriakos Gikas, Konstantinos Parthenis, Yannis Moralis, Yannis Tsarouchis and many others. The rich auction could not fail to include creations of modern and contemporary art by Alekos Fassianos, Alexis Akrithakis, Vlassis Kaniaris, Yannis Psychopedis, Demosthenes Kokkinidis, Nikos Kessanlis, Pavlos, Opi Zounis, Thanasis Tsigos, Panagiotis Tetsis, Manolis Charos, Maria Filopoulou, Pavlos Samios, John Christoforou, Tasos Mantzavinos, Sotiris Sorongas, George Lazongas, George Lappas, George Rorris, Giannis Spyropoulos, Diamantis Diamantopoulos, Giannis Kottis among many others. Sculpture has its place of honour with works by Giannoulis Halepas, Theodoros Papagiannis, George Zongolopoulos, Sofia Vari and Takis.
