The Council of Museums of the Ministry of Culture gave a unanimous positive opinion on the studies – architectural, structural and electromechanical – concerning the modernization and functional restoration of the Museum of Zakynthos.

The building of the Museum has a total area of 1,780 sq.m., including the gallery, and is located in Dionisios Solomos Square. It houses exhibition spaces, laboratories for the conservation of archaeological finds, offices of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Zakynthos, as well as secondary auxiliary spaces. The premises are arranged in two zones, the noon zone (ground floor and first floor), where the exhibition areas are located, and the north zone (ground floor, 1st mezzanine, 2nd mezzanine), where all the support functions are located.

According to the studies, the two-zone arrangement in the organisation of the Museum’s spaces is maintained. In the noon zone, the entrance area (foyer) is formed on the ground floor with a ticket office and the permanent and temporary exhibition rooms on either side of this area, while the entire floor is allocated to the permanent exhibition. In the northern zone, the vertical circulation (lift for the disabled and two staircases) is located, while on the ground floor there is a cloakroom, sanitary facilities and electrical and mechanical installations.

The interventions envisaged, among others, include the reopening of the blocked skylights in the roof, the removal of floors and walls in the exhibition areas, the installation of an elevator inside and the configuration of an external ramp on the south side, the enlargement of the auxiliary spaces for the integration of electromechanical installations, and the reconstruction of morphological elements on the facades. Also provided are air conditioning – ventilation, electrical installation, lighting, water supply – drainage, active fire protection (fire detection, fire extinguishing), audiovisual installation (data network, loudspeaker installation, alarm, CCTV), lift installation and photovoltaic station.
