*******

The SCOPE AND AMBITION of the present work were limited to what I could or wanted or happened to recall and deposit here as a personal anthology of poems of elegiac tone. My object is elegiac and epitaph poetry, in their distinction as well as in their intersection・and any references I make to samples of one kind or the other are intended only to help create a connective tissue between the selected poems, so that we can say that, in some way that we are interested in thinking about, these poems are part of a common history. Inevitably, then, in our wanderings we will come across poems that belong, or can be argued to belong, in one form or another, to one poetic tradition or another, to the epitaph or the elegiac, inasmuch as both are versions of lamentations about the fatal losses of life.
