Alkis Charalambidis‘ three volume book “The Art in the Twentieth Century” is republished revised in a volume of 780 pages.
The book begins with an introduction to 19th century art and then examines, on a global basis, 20th century painting, sculpture and architecture as well as other forms of expression that dominated art, especially after World War II (Happening, Environment, Body Art, Performance, Land Art, Conceptual Art, Video Art, etc.). The text, coordinated with updated visual material (1,267 images), adapted to today’s requirements, offers the reader essential knowledge in a continuous flow, helping him to form his own view of a period exuberant in artistic pursuits and achievements.
The author classifies and processes a voluminous, often unwieldy and settled material, clarifies issues of terminology, simplifies obscure analyses, and reconciles similar or even conflicting views, while making use of the discourse of both the artists themselves and art historians and critics. Finally, it ensures the autonomy of the sections, while maintaining their sub-structural connection.
