The Director of the Institute of Oral Biology of the University of Zurich, Professor Efthimios Mitsiadis, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the Department of Dentistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Honorary Ceremony took place on Thursday 10 October 2024 at 12:00 in the Ceremonial Hall of the Old Building of the Faculty of Philosophy.

A Short Bio

Professor Efthimios Mitsiadis was born in Larissa and received his degree in Dentistry from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1983. In the following years he pursued postgraduate studies in Oral Biology, Pediatric Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Genetics and Immunology at the Department of Dentistry of the University of Lyon in France.

In 1993 he completed his PhD in the scientific field of Developmental Biology at the same university. Postdoctoral studies in the same field followed in Helsinki, Finland, in Molecular Biology at Karolinska University in Stockholm and Yale University in the United States, and were completed at the University of Marseille in France, where he received the highest academic degree and remained until 2001 as Professor and Director of the Department of Molecular and Developmental Biology.

Among other positions, he was Professor at the Kings University of London, where he was the Director of the Laboratory of Head and Face Genetics, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences and Genetics at the School of Dentistry of the National Academy of Sciences in Athens, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Naples, Madrid, Lyon, Ancona, Bari, Marseille, and the Research and Technology Foundation of Heraklion. From 2006 until today, he is Professor and Director of the Institute of Oral Biology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Professor Efthimios Mitsiadis has been a member of numerous scientific committees representing Greece during the decade 1998-2008 and Switzerland during the periods 2012-2016 & 2017-2021 in major European Research and Technology projects. At the same time, from 1998 until today, he has been a member of evaluation committees for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Greece and abroad.

He has received more than 70 awards and honours, and has managed more than 28 research projects, with research focus on applications of biomechanics and tissue engineering with stem cell applications, applications with the pioneering method to study cellular interactions in a chip environment (“tooth-on-a-chip”), the role of NOGO-A in incomplete enamelogenesis, Notch signalling in mycelial and root formation, head and neck cancer, the study of superficial clefting, etc.

Professor Efthimios Mitsiadis has a particularly rich literary oeuvre. Since 2000 he has been involved in the publication, as a member or main editor, of 22 international journals of high scientific prestige in the field of Oral Biology. He has participated as an invited speaker in 140 scientific conferences. He has published 147 articles in prestigious international scientific journals that have accumulated 10,000 citations. He displays Hirsch Index h=59 and a personal overall resonance index greater than 750. He has contributed to 20 book chapters and has authored three books on Dental and Periodontal Tissue Formation and Regeneration, Pathogenetic Mechanisms of the Head and Face Region, and Dental Tissue Engineering Nanomaterials.

Professor Efthimios Mitsiadis is one of the leading pioneering experts in the research of Developmental, Molecular Biology and Biomechanics of Dental Tissues in the global scientific community.
