The House of Cyprus is hosting an art exhibition dedicated to the refugee stamp, the fee introduced by the Cypriot government a few days after the Turkish invasion in 1974, in order to support the refugee fund and to inform the international community about the Cyprus problem. The ‘prosfigosimo’, as it is commonly called, depicts A. Tassos’ important woodcut ‘Cyprus 1974’, which shows a girl sitting in a suitcase, surrounded by barbed wire. It is affixed to everything sent by the Cypriot postal service, thus conveying the message of the occupation of part of the island and the displacement of part of the population to all corners of the earth.

The iconic engraving of A. Tassos, the “little Cypriot”, as he called it, for five decades remains the most faithful and steadfast witness of the ongoing Cyprus problem. It has become a symbol for Cyprus and at the same time has influenced the artistic production of the country.

This exhibition, which was first hosted by the House of Representatives of Cyprus and then travelled to the High Commission of Cyprus in the United Kingdom, is now moving to Athens.
