The “Hellenic Sinology Center“, a bridge and networking platform that promotes academic cooperation in the field of Chinese studies between China and Greece, focusing on Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean region, was officially inaugurated in Corfu on Friday, August 30, 2024.

The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of China to Greece, Xiao Junzheng, Professor and Senator of the World Council of Sinologists, Director of the World Centre for Sinology of the Beijing University of Language and Culture, Xu Baofeng, the Rector of the Ionian University, Professor Andreas Floros, the Director of the Sinology Center and holder of the UNESCO Chair on Threats to Cultural Heritage, Professor Stavros Katsios and the Executive Director of the Hellenic Sinology Center and member of the Steering Committee of the UNESCO Chair on Threats to Cultural Heritage at the Ionian University, Dr. Elena Avramidou

The central objective of this initiative is to further promote exchanges and joint research projects between scholars on both sides.

Ambassador Xiao Junzheng stressed that the establishment of the “Hellenic Sinology Center” is not only an important milestone in academic exchanges and cultural cooperation between China and Greece, but also a solid step forward in deepening cultural exchanges and promoting mutual understanding between the two cultures, stressing that the Embassy will fully support its development in order to build a solid bridge of cooperation between China and the West.

Professor Stavros Katsios referred to the activities related to Chinese studies and the educational programmes that have been operating at the Ionian University for the last 18 months, highlighting the consolidated desire of the two countries to deepen their cooperation.

Finally, the Rector of the Ionian University, Professor Andreas Floros, explained that within one year, the Center has already implemented an integrated development, from the design of the framework for its establishment, to its effective activation, with the registration and training of the staff that surrounds it, playing a positive role in the constructive dialogue between two different and great cultures.
