How can we approach the concept of the fort today, in relation to the traditional architecture of the towers of Mani? Is it just a structural shell or can it also be conceptualised in various ways, using visual, digital and new media?
Besides its war/military purpose, the fortress is associated with observation, habitation, the urban planning of a settlement, but also with further symbolic connotations such as the perception of property lines, the sense of control, and the physical boundaries between people.
In the exhibition “Post-Fortresses”, the six participating visual artists approach a range of subjects related to the idea of fortification, seeking to revisit old and new narratives, taking as a reference point the fortified complex of Troupakis-Mourtzinos.
Using different media that activate multiple senses of the audience, the aim is to perceive local traditions, stories and places with a contemporary and timely perspective that will reinvent the Mani of past centuries in the present day.
