The British School of Athens and the Association of Argolida Philologists, with the support of the Municipality of Nafplion and the Centre for Hellenic Studies of Harvard University, are organizing a conference on Saturday 10 February 2024, at the building of the Vouleftikon in Nafplion. Its aim is to highlight new studies on the relationship between Philhellenism and the Greek Revolution of 1821.

The Association of Argolida Philologists in 2024 celebrates 40 years of creative presence. Having established itself within and outside the prefecture as a key pole of knowledge and culture, it commemorates the 200 years since the death of Lord Byron on the one hand, and turns its gaze towards young people, wishing to contribute to the love of History and Humanism, values that have inspired and continue to inspire the Philhellenes, wherever they live. For these reasons he is one of the organizers of the Workshop.

On the part of the British School of Athens, the conference is organized in the framework of the research project “Unpublished archives of British Philhellenism during the Greek Revolution of 1821“,which is being implemented in the BSA in cooperation with  Νational Library of Greece (NLG)and thanks to the generous support of Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). With a time horizon of three years (2021-24), the project has two objectives: one is to create a digital archive (The George Finlay Papers) which includes original documents from the papers of the Scottish volunteer and historian George Finlay (1799-1875) and the English captain Frank Abney Hastings (1794-1828) and which form part of the  George Finlay collection of BSA. The second is to shed new light on the relationship between Philhellenism and the Greek Revolution of 1821 through a series of scholarly activities such as academic conferences, blog posts, lectures, workshops, and the publication of studies on the subject, including an edited volume to be published in the Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies series of the BSA by Routledge.
