The publication History of Art in Greece . Painting and Sculpture of the 20th century, records the course of Greek art in the 20th century. The artists, far from the centres of European art and under the difficult political conditions that prevailed in Greece, tried to follow the modern movements, to combine the old with the new, tradition with the avant-garde.
The volume covers the entire century, examining the history of Greek art in the periods 1900 – 1922, Interwar (1922 – 1945), Postwar art (1945 – 1960), Critical years (1960 – 1980), Critical years (1980 – 1999).
In the book, Miltiades Papanikolaou inevitably highlights mainly the artists who, on the one hand, followed contemporary artistic trends, and on the other hand, expressed the ideological current of Greece in the 20th century.
