The Board of Directors of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies held an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, 25 October, at the Historical Museum of Crete, following the announcement of the death of Professor Giorgos Grammatikakis, member of the Society.
The President and the members of the Council expressed their personal grief and the grief of the members of the SCHS for the loss of Giorgos Grammatikakis, a multifaceted personality who left a strong imprint on science, education and culture. His name is directly linked to the organisation and development of the University of Crete, where he was Professor from 1982 to 2006 and Rector from 1990 to 1996.
A member of the SCHS since December 1984, George Grammatikakis was constantly present in the activities of the Society and the Historical Museum of Crete. The members of the Council recalled with emotion his active participation in the General Assemblies of the Society and the witty discussions with him in the garden of the HMC.
His intellectual breadth, humour and dedication will be precious memories of a very dear friend for all.
The Board of Directors of the Company decided the following:
- The Greek flag and the flag of the European Union should be displayed at half-staff for three days at the Historical Museum of Crete and the home page of the Historical Museum of Crete should be dedicated to his memory.
- The SCHS should organise a special tribute to his person and work.
