The long-awaited staging of Medea by the great German director Frank Kastorf will be presented in a world premiere at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus on July 21 and 22.
The longtime director of Berlin’s Volksbühne arrives at Epidaurus for the first time to present his own version of Medea, with a brilliant cast of Greek actors.
The cast of this production includes: Maria Nafpliotou, Evdokia Roumelioti, Stefania Goulioti, Sofia Kokkali, Angeliki Papoulia, Nikos Psarras, Aineias Tsamatis, and Nikolas Chanakoulas
Frank Kastorf will present his own version of Medea based on the tragedy of Euripides, a tragedy groundbreaking for its time, as the German director avers: “2,500 years ago Euripides presented in front of 15,000 spectators such a feminist theme. It is great that it makes us think, to reflect on what a woman means. A woman all alone and persecuted. A woman inside this architectural structure of so many years. When I visited Epidaurus, during winter months, the theatre without audience, I also felt this loneliness”.
In Epidaurus, Kastorf will present a performance based on Euripides’ Medea tragedy, combined with the writings of the German author Heiner Müller and the poetry of the “damned” Arthur Rimbaud.
In the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus the spectatorship will experience the mythical figure of Medea unfold on stage through five female actors: Stefania Goulioti, Sofia Kokkali, Maria Nafpliotou, Angeliki Papoulia and Evdokia Roumelioti.
