Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Texas A&M Engineering of Texas A&M University, USA, are co-organizing the Constantin Carathéodory Symposium on Thermodynamics, July 10-15, 2023, in Greece, to celebrate the 150th birthday of Constantinos Karatheodoris and his contribution to the positive sciences and the engineering sciences.
World-renowned researchers and academics, coming from 30 institutions from 11 countries, will meet in Greece to participate in the Symposium.
The official celebration will begin at AUTH, with a Symposium on the application of thermodynamics to the behavior of composite materials. Afterwards, the participants will spend a day in Stageira – the birthplace of Aristotle – to continue the scientific dialogue. The next day, they will move to Alexandroupolis – near ancient Abdira, the birthplace of Democritus – for more thermodynamic discussions and end up in Nea Vyssa, where a Museum in honor of the Karatheodoris family was recently established.
“The Constantin Carathéodory Symposium highlights the ongoing collaboration between Texas A&M Engineering and AUTH, while simultaneously promoting the exchange of knowledge and ideas between scientists and engineers who continue to explore the limits of thermodynamics and its applications in the behavior of materials” he said on the occasion the Symposium, the Rector of AUTH, Professor Dimitrios Kovaios, and underlined “it is particularly important that the Symposium starts in Thessaloniki, as Konstantinos Karatheodoris is recognized as one of the key figures behind the founding of the Aristotle University”.
“This world-class gathering of scientists from various disciplines of the engineering sciences is intended to pay tribute to Konstantinos Karatheodoris and his contributions to thermodynamics, on the occasion of his 150th birthday,” said Texas A&M University Distinguished Professor Dimitris Lagoudas.
Konstantinos Karatheodoris, a Greek mathematician with a distinguished academic career in Germany, made remarkable advances in real and complex analysis, the calculus of variations, and measure theory. In addition, he developed a new framework for thermodynamics. The profound contribution of Karatheodoris places him as one of the most remarkable mathematicians from antiquity to the present day.
