A leading pianist with a long international career, numerous awards and countless praising reviews on the serene power of her performances, her astonishing musical memory and her impeccable expressiveness. A beloved acquaintance of the Greek audience, the great Portuguese soloist, whose CV includes both recordings of reference works and important live performances in the classical and romantic repertoire, will be at the Megaron on Monday 4 April at 8:30 pm.
In her one and only recital, Maria João Pires will share with us some of the most beautiful pages of her German and French oeuvre: the masterful Sonata No. 13 in A major, D. 664 and Franz Schubert, one of Claude Debussy’s most dreamy compositions, the Suite from Bergamo, from which the lovely “Clair de lune” stands out, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s technically demanding Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, the last – and perhaps most talked about – piano sonata written by the brilliant German composer.

Maria João Pires
Born on 23 July 1944 in Lisbon, Maria João Pires made her debut at the age of 4 and began studying music and piano with Campos Coelho and Francine Benoît. She later continued her studies in Germany with Rosl Schmid and Karl Engel. In addition to live performances, she has also made many recordings. She worked for 15 years with the Erato record label and had a two-year collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon.
Since the 1970s, he has devoted himself to one important goal, the impact of art on life, community and education, trying to discover new ways to push society to adopt a new way of thinking. The two main pillars of its approach are respect for the evolution of individuals and different cultures and the encouragement of the exchange of ideas.
In 1999, Maria João Pires founded the Belgais Centre for the Study of the Arts in Portugal, teaching herself in interdisciplinary workshops aimed at professional musicians and amateurs alike. In addition, the Belgais Centre’s concert hall regularly hosts concerts and recordings, which in the future will be available to the international digital community (with and without payment).
In 2012, he presented two additional projects in Belgium: the Partitura Choirs, an initiative to create and develop choirs with children from disadvantaged backgrounds (such as the Belgian “Hesperos Choir”), and the Partitura Workshops. Through these original actions, Maria João Pires aims to create an altruistic dynamic between artists from different generations, proposing in a world too focused on competitiveness an alternative philosophy that is spreading worldwide through Partitura Projects and Workshops.
