The appearance of the neighborhoods is changing. 

Mayor Zerva’s inspection of the redevelopment projects around Chalkidiki Street.

The city’s neighborhoods are given a makeover through a programme of integrated aesthetic and functional upgrading interventions implemented by the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The redevelopment works currently underway around Halkidikis Street, in the area of the E’ Municipal Community, was inspected (24/01) at noon by the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas.

In his statements, Mr. Zervas referred to a very important intervention in the heart of the 5th Municipal Community, which concerns an area of about 220 acres with beneficiaries of more than 30,000 citizens. “Seventeen streets are being modified with new pavement materials, trees, lighting, urban equipment. A part of our city that was abandoned is changing its appearance, the neighborhoods are changing their appearance“, said the Mayor of Thessaloniki, stressing that with the completion of the works in the area of Halkidiki Street, the crews will then move to the area of Toumba, in the 4th Municipal Community.

“Every neighborhood under the administration of Zervas will see the Municipality of Thessaloniki intervening and making some important changes to improve the standard of living of residents“, said Deputy Mayor of Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility Ephraim Kyrizidis.

“The Municipality of Thessaloniki is making a comprehensive intervention in a very densely populated area, where no had been done for decades. These interventions are aimed at urban regeneration and upgrading the quality of life of citizens”, said Dimitris Mitrou, technical advisor to the Mayor of Thessaloniki.

The area around Chalkidiki Street is the first to be included in the extensive programme of the Municipality of Thessaloniki for neighborhood regeneration. Under this programme, the Municipality of Thessaloniki is intervening in a comprehensive way in each neighborhood, implementing a grid of interventions for the reconstruction of public space, ranging from asphalt paving and reconstruction of pavements to new tree planting and enhancement of urban greenery, upgrading of municipal lighting, projects to improve accessibility for people with disabilities and installation of new urban furniture.
